Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced by the developing baby and found in the amniotic fluid surrounding them. An AFP test measures the levels of this protein in a sample of amniotic fluid obtained through amniocentesis. Elevated AFP levels can indicate potential neural tube defects (like spina bifida) or other birth defects, while low levels may suggest Down syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities. This test is typically performed between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy as part of prenatal screening to assess the baby health.
