THIS IS A HISTORICAL TEST THAT WAS USED TO IDENTIFY THE PRESENCE OF FETAL HEMOGLOBIN (HBF) IN A BLOOD SAMPLE. FETAL HEMOGLOBIN IS MORE RESISTANT TO DENATURATION BY AN ALKALINE SOLUTION THAN ADULT HEMOGLOBIN. IT WAS USED TO ASSESS FOR CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE ELEVATED LEVELS OF FETAL HEMOGLOBIN, SUCH AS HEREDITARY PERSISTENCE OF FETAL HEMOGLOBIN (HPFH). THIS TEST HAS LARGELY BEEN REPLACED BY MORE MODERN METHODS LIKE HPLC OR ELECTROPHORESIS.
