A Direct Coombs Test is a laboratory test used to detect antibodies that have attached themselves directly to red blood cells. These antibodies can cause the body's immune system to destroy red blood cells prematurely, leading to hemolytic anemia. The test is helpful in diagnosing autoimmune hemolytic anemia, as well as other conditions like blood transfusion reactions and hemolytic disease of the newborn.
