The test KETONE BODY (BETA HYDROXYBUTYRATE), SERUM is used to measure the level of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a type of ketone body, in the blood. Ketone bodies are produced by the liver when the body doesn't have enough glucose for energy. This can happen during fasting, prolonged exercise, or in people with diabetes who don't have enough insulin. High levels of BHB in the blood can indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious complication of diabetes. This test is also used to monitor the effectiveness of insulin therapy in people with diabetic ketoacidosis.
